3 - 5 September 2025, “Sergiu T. Chiriacescu” Conference Centre, Transilvania University of Brașov

The Faculty of Music within Transilvania University of Brașov has the honour of hosting the ninth edition of the International Musicological Conference, Soundscapes in the Balkans, themed on Rethinking Histories, Reflecting Theories and Ideologies.

Its partners in the endeavour to strengthen the musical and cultural interactions among the countries of South-Eastern Europe and beyond, are the National University of Music, Bucharest, the Regional Association for the Study of Music of the Balkans under the aegis of the International Musicological Society, as well as the Union of Composers and Musicologists of Romania.

This edition of the conference aims at bringing a major contribution to the mapping of soundscapes and the exploration of musical cultures in the Balkans, both diachronically and synchronically. With this vision and for this purpose, it will develop innovative approaches, and foster interaction, scientific research and intercultural dialogue among the musicologists interested in the thematic axes of the conference, with an emphasis on concepts and parameters such as: cultures and soundscapes in the Balkans, rethinking of histories, reflection of theories and ideologies, traditions and diversities, Byzantine and post-Byzantine chant, music and other media, technology of music, interdisciplinary musicological approaches to music, multidimensional aspects of music performance, innovative streams of contemporary music education, analytical innovations of the different musical cultures, and musical avant-garde in the Mediterranean, Balkans and broader South-East European Region.

Together with musicologists and musicians all over the world, we look forward to welcoming you at this event featuring fascinating dialogues and captivating musical moments.
