  • Almost 30 million RON, PNRR-sourced, were invested in research and digitization equipment at UNITBV

Almost 30 million RON, PNRR-sourced, were invested in research and digitization equipment at UNITBV

12 May 2026

Equipment and software, worth over 28,610,424 RON (VAT included), were purchased by Transilvania University of Brasov through the National Recovery and Resilience Programme (PNRR) “Grants for the Digitalization of Universities”, within the project “Digital Transformation for Innovation and Competitiveness” (code 1251096851). Through this programme, spanning four years, a range of didactic, research and digitization equipment was purchased, and courses for both students and academic teaching personnel were organised, with a view to developing their digital skills. Started in 2022, the project was aimed at boosting the digital transformation of Transilvania University of Brasov, through investments in the education and research infrastructure, through the enhancement of the digital knowledge and skills, as well as through student-targeted IT services. For this purpose, within the University’s Research and Development Institute, the hubs and labs dedicated to various formative activities have been provided with cutting-edge equipment, and several training courses focused on digital skills were organised, tailored on the trainees’ specific levels of knowledge and expertise.

The PNRR-financed investments include, for instance, a development platform for humanoid robots. This platform, now operational within the “Process Control Systems” Research Hub allows the students and researchers to develop robots and machines, resorting to complex hardware with (often AI-assisted) advanced software, in order to simulate human movements and cognitive functions.

A wide range of equipment was also purchased for the students and researchers of the Faculty of Medicine, such as a birth simulator with automatic delivery mode and obstetric scenarios. It allows the future doctors to train for various rare and critical obstetric scenarios and emergencies, without risk to patients.

The forestry operations simulator, now a technical asset of the Hub for Forest Engineering, Forest Planning and Land Surveying, is another digital equipment underlying an education process at international standards. This simulator, worth 600,000 RON, makes the best of multiple screens to create an immersive experience, eliminates the risk of accidents during the learning process, and simulates the operation of high-performance equipment and field conditions. The simulator is now used by the students of the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering, with a view to developing the technical skills in harvesting, handling, stacking and storing timber.

Apart from the equipment within the research hubs, many computers for the faculty laboratories, dedicated software used in the educational processes, as well as training courses in various fields, attended by hundreds of students and teaching personnel members alike, were also purchased by means of PNRR.

The total amount of almost 30 million RON was non-refundable. These acquisitions brought a major contribution to the implementation of the University’s Digital Transformation Strategy for 2022-2032.  At present, all the University’s undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, but also the academic teaching personnel, have access to this advanced digital infrastructure, and capitalise thereon in their didactic and research activities

Transilvania University of Braşov has almost 22,000 students in all the cycles of studies, and over 1,000 teaching personnel members within its 18 faculties.

The funds made available through the National Recovery and Resilience Programme were accessed within the project “Digital Transformation for Innovation and Competitiveness”, Investment Measure 16:Digitization of Universities and Their Preparation for the Digital Professions of the Future.
