Chamber Jazz @ Transilvania University: Benoît Delbecq
23 October 2026, at 7:00 p.m., Studio 181 hall, Rectorate building, Transilvania University of Brașov
Within the cultural programme Chamber Jazz @ Transilvania University, this season’s first concert brings, as always, a world-class musician to the audience of Brașov.
The Multicultural Centre within Transilvania University of Brașov invites therefore the academic and entire Brașov community to a novel musical journey, this time in the tunes of Benoît Delbecq, an acclaimed pianist and composer of Parisian origin.
For three decades, Benoît Delbecq has been standing out on the international jazz scene. A genuine craftsman of sound, he vibrates with an overflowing creative energy which triggers the exploration and materialization of ever-new visions and sound universes.
At the age of 17, the young pianist was refining his piano aptitudes under the direct guidance and mentorship of Mal Waldron and Alan Silva. Later on, he enjoyed the support of top tier artists, such as György Ligeti, Paul Bley, Pascal Dusapin, Steve Lacy and Fred Hersch, but also Muhal Richard Abrams and Steve Coleman, alongside whom he attended the innovating programmes of Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, Canada, between 1987 and 1990.
Once past his 30ies, the artist laid, discreetly and without ostentation, the bases of a fascinating musical oeuvre. He enriched the dancing spirit of jazz with the technique of the prepared piano, through which dimensional lumber is delicately inserted between certain strings; and playfully, almost magically changes the sonority for a part of the instrument. A captivating artistry of timbre and polyrhythm intertwines with a deeply personal sense of proportion, melody and harmony, giving his ever-evolving creation a unique artistic identity in the contemporary musical landscape.
With a track record of over 150 albums, among which about 57 are single-authored or co-authored, the artist has been awarded a great many international prizes and distinctions. Since 2018, his name has been featuring in DownBeat Critics Poll, one of the most prestigious jazz rankings.
An indefatigable explorer of the musical universe, Benoît Delbecq fervently supports the technique and method of collective creation, which he regards as a fertile space for encounter and aesthetic or poetic fusion. He was one of the initiators and founders of Hask Collective Paris (1992–2004) and Astrolab (1993–1996), two milestone bands for the European jazz scene, through their emphasis on personal creative touch.
In 2009, he established the band Bureau de Son, along with Steve Argüelles – a drummer and music producer of British origin, but settlement in Paris, and with Nicolas Becker – an Oscar-awarded sound designer of French origin. In 2022, they were joined by Sarah Murcia – an acclaimed Parisian double bassist and composer.
Apart from performing concerts and undertaking sound explorations in recording studios, Benoît Delbecq delivers masterclasses and workshops all over the world. Moreover, he composes tunes for film, theatre and dance. He collaborates with writers, poets and visual artists.
We will be waiting for you on Friday, 23 October 2026, starting at 7:00 p.m., in the Multicultural Centre of Transilvania University (29 Eroilor Blvd., Brașov). The entrance is free, within the limit of available seats.
