From theory to practice
8,000 seedlings planted by UNITBV students
The 3rd year students of the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering participate every year in afforestation works together with the business partners in the forestry field.
This year, the woks unfolded between April 5 and 9 in collaboration with Kronstadt R.A. Local Public Forests Authority Brașov, Local Public Directorate of Forests Piatra Craiului Zărnești R.A., Local Public Directorate of Forests Măieruș R.A., Forest District Ciucaș R.A. (Tărlungeni), Mâneciu Forest District (Prahova) and Sudrigiu Forest District (Bihor) within the ROMSILVA National Forests Authority. Works were also carried out at the Sânpetru teaching venue of Transilvania University of Brașov.
At the beginning of April, over 70 students, coordinated by 8 professors from the specialism Silviculture and Forestry Engineering, planted about 8,000 seedlings. In addition to planting, the students also worked in the partners’ nurseries, where they exchanged information. At the Sudrigiu Forest District (Bihor) within the ROMSILVA National Forests Authority, the students planted 3,000 spruce seedlings on an area of 7 ha, which were previously grafted at the teaching venue in Sânpetru. In Brașov, on Dealul Melcilor (near the water tower), the students afforested the area with 1,500 wild pine seedlings. Also, in the Tărlungeni nursery, the students put into practice what they learned in theory and prepared seedlings for afforestation.
Together with the representatives of the Local Public Directorate of Forests Pădurea Craiului R.A. Zărnești, the students of the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering planted approximately 1,200 seedlings of spruce and mountain maple species, and on Valea Bogății (within the Local Public Directorate of Forests Măieruș R.A.), approximately 1,000 sessile oak seedlings were planted.
Orchard planted by students of the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering and the Faculty of Food and Tourism
In addition to existing seedlings maintenance at the teaching venue in Sânpetru, the forestry students, together with those from the Faculty of Food and Tourism, engaged in setting an orchard. 150 fruit trees were planted on the terraces of the Sânpetru teaching venue.
Remnants of a natural disaster “repaired” by forestry students
Last winter, in Cheia, Prahova county, the strong wind broke the trees on an area of almost 80 hectares, leaving behind a desolate landscape. This spring, the students of the Faculty Silviculture and Forest Engineering gathered their strength to the restoration of the area and planted about 1,200 spruce seedlings.
Throughout their activity, the students were coordinated by professors from the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering in Brașov, but also by the specialists of the Forest districts.
