Language structures and practices
19-21 September 2024, “Sergiu T. Chiriacescu” International Conference Centre
Between 19 and 21 September, the Faculty of Letters organises the 8th edition of the International Conference on Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, “Structure, Use and Meaning (SUM)”. The topic of this year’s conference is Language Structures and Practices.
This edition puts forward a wide array of interdisciplinary topics focused on language structures and practices in today’s context marked by significant global shifts such as migration, globalization, intercultural communication, and digitalization. The chosen topic has stirred the interest of scholars involved in various fields of research.
Linguists define language practices as the choices individuals make in sound, word usage, and grammar, shaped by various factors (Spolsky 2004). Sociologists view language as an integral part of social life, spanning negotiation, politics, and education (Schatski 2001). Education, particularly foreign language learning, focuses on developing language skills in reading, writing, and oral communication, emphasising real-world application (Gee 2004). The emerging field of neurodidactics explores the connection between brain and learning (Elsenbaumer 2013). Moreover, digital language practices enable global interaction through various digital media, such as social networks and vlogs/blogs, and shape new language structures mirroring the digital age (Androutsopoulos and Juffermans 2014).
