Transilvania University of Brașov – a partner in ROGEN national project
The first national genomic map
Transilvania University of Brașov is a partner in the national project “Development of Genomic Research in Romania” (ROGEN), coordinated by “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Bucharest. The project has as its purpose to strengthen research in the field of genomics, and to develop a modern infrastructure that supports personalised medicine, prevention and accurate medical diagnosis.
In order for genomic medicine to be effective, it is essential to have reference data adapted to the Romanian population. In their absence, genetic interpretations might be incomplete or erroneous, and important information for health might be overlooked.
ROGEN aims at sequencing 5,000 genomes at high coverage, with a view to making the first map of the Romanian population’ genetic diversity, thus providing a starting point for:
predictive and personalised medicine;
research into rare and complex diseases;
development of policies and approaches based on strong scientific evidence;
heightened collaboration between academic centres and research institutions.
Transilvania University of Brașov will recruit 250 participants for the purposes of this project.
Transilvania University of Brașov thereby supports the development of genomic research and the access to relevant data for personalised medicine.
